Austin, TX - On Tuesday afternoon, SB 1 was given final passage through the Texas Senate hours after it had received final approval from the House. It is now on its way to Governor Abbott’s desk where he is expected to sign the bill into law.

Our Vote Texas issues the following statement:

“As we have already said, there can be no doubt that SB 1 worsens the voting process, making it even harder for Texans to vote at a time when we are clamoring to be heard.

“The passage of this bill despite months of opposition from countless Texans from all across the state is disheartening but we know that it is precisely because of that fierce opposition that some of the most egregious provisions of the bill — such as targeting Souls to the Polls efforts, shuttering polling locations in Black and Brown communities and paving the way for the overturning of future elections — did not make it in its final form.

“Texas voters stood together speaking truth to power again and again because we know that our paths to the vote are connected and where there are senseless barriers built based on nothing more than lies, we are called to speak out and break those barriers down. We are committed to continuing the fight for voter rights advancements in Texas and to continuing our efforts to build up that strong culture of civic engagement that Texans are proud to be part of.”
