Austin, TX - At nearly a half hour before midnight, the Texas House passed SB 1, the harmful omnibus voter suppression bill that adds unnecessary restrictions to the voting process and would jeopardize voting access for our most vulnerable Texans. It will go up for a final vote on Friday, August 27th.

Update: As of Friday, August 27, 1:45pm, the Texas House passed SB 1 and it now heads back to the Senate.

Valerie Street, President of Our Vote Texas issues the following statement upon the passage of this bill:

“Policy that has the effect of restricting access to the ballot box for voters is legislative voter suppression.
And when we are talking about voter suppression in our country we must know and acknowledge the racist history behind it. There can be no doubt that SB 1 worsens the voting process, making it even harder for Texans to vote at a time when Texas voters are clamoring to be heard.

“We are saddened to see SB 1 pass and become that much closer to becoming law but we know that this fight doesn’t end tonight in this chamber OR in the days ahead when it returns back to the Senate.

“Most importantly, we are driven by the work and tireless advocacy of other Texans standing in this fight with us to protect our vote. We are so thankful for every Texan who has spoken out loudly and tirelessly against this harmful bill. We know that tomorrow is but another day for us to continue in the mission to build that strong culture of civic engagement that Texans are so ready and proud to root themselves in.

“What we also know is that it is imperative that Congress and this White House turn federal voting rights legislation into law to restore voting rights protections. Texas lawmakers working in defense of voters have taken it as far as they can go and it is now past time for Congress, for this U.S. Senate, to act.”
