Austin, TX - We join advocates and members of the voting rights advocacy community in celebrating the introduction of HR 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Our Vote Texas issues the following statement:

“We are urging members of the House to pass this critical and timely legislation to ensure that everyone's voice is protected in the democratic process and to honor the legacy of those who have come before us in the fight for the vote as well as the fight to protect that vote.

“This year alone we are seeing over 400 anti-voter bills in state houses across the country, not the least of which are the deeply harmful bills we have been seeing right here in Texas, over multiple sessions now. Texans cannot indefinitely fend off attacks on our vote and the time for federal action must be right now.

“The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR 4) strengthens our freedom to vote by making sure that any attempt at changes to voting rules that could discriminate against voters based on race or background are federally reviewed. This means we make sure that we all have an equal say in our future and that our voting rights are protected.

“Congressman John Lewis once told us, "The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy."

“It is incumbent upon this Congress and this White House to ensure that our path to the vote, to this powerful non-violent tool, is free from discriminatory barriers and that we are all able to exercise our vote as a tool of change for ourselves, our families and our communities.”
