Austin, TX - Today the Texas Senate voted to pass SB 2, a dangerous bill that seeks to further criminalize voting and potentially opens Texans up to attack for even good faith mistakes when going to cast a ballot.

This bill was swiftly voted out of committee and taken up in the Senate chamber despite the many Texans who spoke out against this legislation and voiced concerns that this bill creates a recipe for preventable disaster when coupled with insufficient funding for voter education to help voters understand how the ever changing voting laws in Texas may impact them.

We will continue to speak out against this bill as it heads to the Texas House along with countless other Texans working to protect our vote.

Our Vote Texas issues the following statement on SB 2’s initial passage today:

"Texans deserve a voting process that is fair, transparent, and easy to understand.  Instead our lawmakers keep finding new ways to sow doubt, mistrust, and confusion.

“SB2 is yet another bill that seeks to criminalize voting while doing nothing to help make the voting process less confusing for Texas voters and Texans have already stood up and told lawmakers this.

“Rather than target voters, our lawmakers should be investing in our voter education and in policies that make voting more accessible for all.”
