Austin, TX - Today in a 49-51 vote on the procedural motion to advance the Freedom To Vote Act, leaders in the U.S. Senate blocked the legislation from moving forward. This is the second time this year, a minority of lawmakers have been able to successfully stymie pro-democracy legislation.

Valerie Street, President of Our Vote Texas issues the following statement:

“Texans, along with many others across the nation, are running out of time to ensure that our rights as voters as well as the power of our vote are protected so that we don’t lose our place and our voice in democracy.

“We are weary and frustrated to see leaders in the Senate mobilize to block important voting rights legislation that protects access to the ballot for us all, ends dark money and combats gerrymandering — all things that uplift the voice and power of the people.

“We can no longer tolerate measures that contribute to the whole erasure of communities of color and target the voting power for our most vulnerable populations.

“We urge the Senate to take the necessary steps to pass the Freedom To Vote Act as well as the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act because we’ve been fending off attacks on our vote long enough.”
