Lesson Module: Art In Protest Movements

Art has long played a pivotal role in movements that have challenged government, politics and social issues worldwide.


objectives

Together, students will explore the resources below and engage in discussion about the history of art in political and social movements + how art continues to mobilize communities today. Then students will have an opportunity to work on an art project consisting of an individual poster that addresses an issue relevant to the student, their school, or their community.

Adaptable for grades 6th - 12th

Key Discussion Questions

  1. How can art serve as a means to educate or serve as a call to action? Have there been moments in history where art has proven particularly effective in doing this? Individual artists who have been effective in doing this?

  2. What images come to mind when we talk about "protest"?

  3. How can art be used to achieve greater accessibility for all?

  4. Do you think art is having a real impact in helping to define current movements happening in the nation or world today? How so?
